Mother tongue is a divine gift. From the holy Quran, we come to know that the most Merciful Almighty Allah has bestowed a mother tongue upon each and every caste, creed, and color.
Mother tongue is so important that people of a country express their ideas, thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc. clearly through their mother tongue. But it is an irony of fate that the rulers of Pakistan tried to impose Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan.
But the people of our country raised their voices against this unlawful decision. Some of the heroic sons came forward and sacrificed their glorious life for the cause of our mother tongue on the 21st February 1952. Rafiq, Salam, Barkat and Jabbar are among them.
Since then this day is called the Shaheed Dibash. Every year we observe this day with solemnity and pay them profound tribute.
Now it is a great pleasure for us that UNESCO has announced February 21 as International Mother Language Day to be observed globally in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs for establishing the rightful place of Bangla.

মাতৃভাষা একটি স্বর্গীয় উপহার / দান। পবিত্র কোরআন শরীফ থেকে আমরা জানতে পারি যে মহান করুণাময় আল্লাহ্ তায়ালা প্রত্যেক জাতি, ধর্ম ও বর্ণকে একটি মাতৃভাষা প্রদান করেছেন।
মাতৃভাষা এতই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ যে একটি দেশের জনগণ মাতৃভাষার মাধ্যমে তাদের চিন্তা, ভাবনা, আবেগ-অনুভূতি প্রভৃতি স্পষ্টভাবে প্রকাশ করে থাকে। কিন্তু ভাগ্যের পরিহাসে তখনকার পাকিস্তানী সরকার উর্দুকে পাকিস্তানের একমাত্র রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে আমাদের উপর চাপিয়ে দেয়ার চেষ্টা করেছিল।
কিন্তু আমাদের দেশের জনগণ এ বেআইনী সিদ্ধান্তের বিরুদ্ধে সোচ্চার হয়ে উঠেছিল। বাংলার কিছু বীর সন্তান এগিয়ে এসে ১৯৫২ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি আমাদের মাতৃভাষার জন্য তাদের মহিমান্বিত জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছিল। যাদের মধ্যে রফিক, সালাম, বরকত, জব্বার অন্যতম।
তখন থেকেই দিনটি শহীদ দিবস নামে অভিহিত হয়। প্রতি বছর আমরা এ দিনটি ভাবগাম্ভীর্যের সাথে স্মরণ করি এবং তাদের গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করি।
এখন এটা আমাদের পরম আনন্দের বিষয় যে বাংলার ন্যায়সঙ্গত স্থান প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য শহিদদের আত্মত্যাগের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ ইউনেস্কো ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে বিশ্বব্যাপী উদযাপিত করার ঘোষণা দিয়েছে।
